Ramona Buzard

Parrot Care Specialist

"I've spent most of my life caring for and learning about parrots and the human-parrot bond. It is my greatest calling to help make the world a better place for birds everywhere."

A Bit About Me

Ever since childhood, I have been fascinated by birds of all types. When I was 12 years old, I got my first parrot - a budgie. I named him Spring and we were the best of friends for years. I remember going to our local library and checking out every book about budgies and other parrots that they had. I would often check them out over and over - hungry to learn much as I could.

Through the years, I have had and cared for budgies, cockatiels, conures and even ducks and geese. I have been fortunate enough to be able to volunteer with my local parrot rescue to spend time with more birds and learn about their stories and the challenges they face. Through adoption, I have successfully rehabilitated several birds with behavioral issues due to substandard husbandry from their previous owners. I am proud to say that they are now thriving, healthy, active, and able to be around humans without fear and aggression.

It all started with those library books all those years ago! Presently, I continue my studies by majoring in Animal Science and working on my certification through the IAABC as a parrot behavioral consultant. I spent 8 months mentoring with one of the top parrot behavior specialists in the US. With her, I learned about how to use positive reinforcement to address behavioral issues with parrots of all types. I also attend workshops, webinars, and take online courses in parrot care and health.

I believe it is extremely important to stay up to date with the most current information available. I do this though continuing education and staying up to date with current studies about parrot care, health, and conservation. Parrot care has been largely dictated by outdated, incorrect information spread mostly through the internet and social media to unknowing parrot owners. I hope to continue to help spread awareness of how to properly care for our birds in order to improve the lives of birds everywhere!

Work and Education Experience

I write about parrot care, behavior, and conservation for the Bird Street Bistro Parrot Blog. I've helped their customers learn more about how to keep their birds healthy and happy. I've also discussed parrot conservation efforts and other issues that they face in the wild.

I attended University of New Mexico before transferring to NM State University majoring in Individualized Studies. I chose this degree so that I could tailor my education to relevant topics to parrot care and helping people navigate the human-parrot bond. I will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in 2025.

I had weekly mentoring sessions with one of the top parrot behavior professionals in the country. In those sessions, I learned about how to use positive reinforcement to address behavioral issues in parrots of different species and how to help their owners look closely at their own behavior and how it affects their bird's behavior. Lessons were based on the work of Barbara Heidenreich, well-respected animal training and behavior specialist.
